Strategic Plan
The Town Council has recently produced a Strategy Document identifying key issues and objectives for the town. It identifies 3 main objectives:
1. The Economy
Dartmouth Town Council wishes to support the economic growth of the town to ensure its future prosperity. This means recognising that tourism is the main driver of the local economy and supporting its further development, while at the same time encouraging the growth of alternative sectors of economic development.
2. The Environment
We wish to ensure that the economic development of the town is sympathetic to its environment, taking particular care over issues such as traffic and parking, river usage, housing and commercial development and any relevant legislation.
3. The Community
As a local council we are close to our community. We take care of it by providing local leadership to improve the quality and range of local services. To this end we are committed to becoming actively involved in all parts of our community by working closely with voluntary and community groups so that we are able to articulate their needs. We will work in partnership with South Hams District Council, Devon County Council and other agencies so that we can pursue our ambition to give our local community a better deal on local services and a stronger voice on decisions that affect their day to day lives.
These are supported by the following policies:-
Policy 1: The regeneration of Dartmouth Market.
Policy 2: To support our commercial tenants to ensure the viability of the town centre’s retail space.
Policy 3: To work to extend the tourist season.
Policy 4: To work with the Economic Development Officer at SHDC and other key stakeholders to attract
suitable non-seasonal businesses to the town.
Policy 5: To ensure that our local environment is attractive and well maintained.
Policy 6: To ensure that Dartmouth Town Council takes all necessary actions to protect the town against the risks of flooding.
Policy 7: To seek to improve the availability on-street and off-street parking for residents and visitors.
Policy 8: To fulfil our legal obligations under the Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Act 2006.
Policy 9: To work with, and for the benefit of, all parts of our community from young people to the elderly and
to communicate with them via the Community Forum.
Policy 10: To support the aspiration of local residents for an indoor swimming pool.
Policy 11: To work with other agencies and stakeholders to encourage the provision of affordable housing for local residents, such development to be of a holistic nature including provision of jobs and facilities.
